Sony unveils Xperia M2 Aqua water-proof smartphone

Japanese smartphone maker Sony has taken the wraps of a new smartphone in the form of the Xperia M2 Aqua. As the name suggests, the phone is water-proof and provides world’s highest level of waterproofing (IP65/68) available in a smartphone.

“The popularity of Xperia M2 showed us that there was a huge demand for premium Sony features at an affordable price-point. Following consumer feedback, we’ve now taken this a step further by bringing our waterproof expertise to a mid-range smartphone for the first time with Xperia M2 Aqua. It is a smartphone that lets customers take the best of Sony technology and entertainment with them wherever they go – come rain or shine – and we are excited to bring it to market,” says Calum MacDougall, Director of Xperia Marketing at Sony Mobile.

According to Sony, Xperia M2 Aqua will be released in black and white colours and will roll out from Autumn 2014 to markets including Latin America, Asia Pacific and Europe. There is no word whether there will be a dual-SIM version of the phone.

Coming to the specifications, the new M2 Aqua is powered by 1.2GHz quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 400 processor and sports a 4.8-inch qHD display. The phone also comes with Android 4.4, 8MP rear camera, 1.1MP front camera and 2330 mAh battery.

In addition, Sony has included 1GB of RAM, 8GB of internal storage, microSD card slot, NFC, 4G LTE and the usual connectivity options.

There is no word on the pricing right now.
